Once a well-kept secret, Indian single malt whisky has taken its place among the world’s most celebrated spirits. This year, Spirit of Toronto is proud to present Amrut, the pioneering distillery that introduced India’s first single malt whisky in 2004 and quietly redefined expectations with a spirit that surprised even the most seasoned palates.
Twenty years on, Amrut remains at the vanguard of Indian whisky, distinguished by its use of 6-row Indian barley grown in Punjab and Rajasthan, with production rooted in Bangalore. This Masterclass begins with the story of Amrut, the distillery that put Indian single malt on the map and helped shape global perceptions of what Indian whisky could be.
From there, guests will explore ‘The Single Malts of India’, a new series that aims to showcase single malts produced across India by other distillers beyond Amrut’s own. Independently bottled and thoughtfully selected, releases such as Kurinji, inspired by the lush Western Ghats, and Marudham, rooted in the vibrant flavours of the south, form part of this bold initiative to explore the diverse terroirs India has to offer.
‘Flavours of India’ is a rare opportunity to trace that journey: its history, its breakthroughs, and the innovations still to come. A masterclass for the discerning and the curious, and a chance to expand both palate and perspective.
This session runs from 5:00 to 6:00pm, offering guests a full 30 minutes of Early Admission to Spirit of Toronto — a quiet window to explore the tasting floor with a head start on the evening’s selections.
